Recently my husband and I went to a nearby upmarket restaurant for dinner. I was looking forward to having their Camembert starter but as I’d had it before I knew I didn’t like the Nutty Melba toast served with it so I asked if they could possibly change the toast for normal bread. The waitress looked at me totally bewildered and said she doesn’t think they have any other bread.
What kind of rules do you have in your life and especially your business to ensure you stay on track?
As with most corporate companies who have policies and rules, so you too should have rules in your business that you do your best to adhere to.
By creating excellent habits, we create excellence in our lives without even realizing it.
I put off becoming an entrepreneur for many years. I had so many reasons why this could go wrong and how I could fail. I made excuses that I didn’t have enough money for start up costs. I didn’t have enough time available to do this parallel to my day job to get going. I didn’t have all the skills I needed. I felt there is too much competition out there. But my biggest excuse was always “the timing isn’t right”.
As the saying goes what you sow is what you reap or what you put in is what you get out.
When I was in the corporate world, I knew that I was only as good as the staff I employed to help me. If I didn’t train and empower my staff with knowledge, then they would never be able to fulfill their role to the standard that I was expecting of them.
New Mindset, New Results
So often we spend our time daydreaming about all the things we are sad and disappointed about in life instead of focusing on what we can be grateful for.
When I find myself daydreaming about disappointments, I give myself a little shake and remind myself to focus on all the good things in my life that far outweigh the bad.
As an entrepreneur it’s sometimes difficult to know when to stop. When have we done enough for one day or for one week?
How many hours a day is enough to reach my goals? When I ask myself this question I also need to ask if my cup is full or, is my cup only half full.
Working at full steam and not stopping, although satisfying to know what I am achieving, leaves me with turmoil that I am not dividing my time up correctly. If I don’t take decisive action this can dominate my mind.
I was reminded of the Elephant Rope Belief story when I met up with an old friend recently. She has been working as a Legal PA, which she doesn’t enjoy and works in the city and hates all the travelling. I asked her why she has not made a move and the reply was simply that there isn’t any work like this in the Northern Suburbs.
Early on in my career I found myself in a pretty awesome job. Working with amazing bosses who helped me to spread my wings, allowing me to learn as I went along and held my hand when I had challenges. I’ll never forget the day I turned 21 and I received a huge bouquet of flowers with a note that said “Never stop smiling, you bring happiness to the office.”
I have been an entrepreneur for a few years now and I share this passion with my husband who has been an entrepreneur for 13 years. Being an entrepreneur is rewarding but you also realize that it can sometimes be a lonely place as there are no colleagues to chat to or office parties to attend. Apart from our clients feedback we don’t have reviews where we are given clear directions and where we need to improve, it’s all up to us.
Many years ago, while watching an episode of Oprah I was profoundly touched by a YouTube clip Oprah shared on that show. It was called 99 Balloons. If you haven’t watched this then you should. It’s about a father who wrote short letters to his newborn son who was born with Edward syndrome and Doctors hadn’t expected him to even make it to birth. It’s a very touching story and I warn you, have the tissues ready. But the message I took from this story and carry with me every day is to live for today.
I recently read Ed Sheeran by Sean Smith. What an eye opener. He wasn’t born with a voice or musical skills. He decided when he was 10 years old that he wanted to learn how to play the guitar and from there he decided he would like to be a singer. For a boy who had to overcome a stutter and develop a singing voice, because he wasn’t very good when he started out, to the young man he is now at the top of his chosen profession as a successful top selling artist.
Some time ago I upgraded my sons’ bed and had to find a new home for his single bed that had super underbed storage draws. I intended to sell the second-hand bed and did a little research on how much a good as new second-hand bed could be sold for. My son’s new bed arrived and suddenly his old bed was terribly in the way and I had to make a decision. On a whim I contacted a charity and asked if they had any families in need of a bed and of course they did.
You know the saying “Your reputation precedes you”. Well it’s true. We go about our lives oblivious to the impact we may be having on others. If we choose to talk badly about people, belittle people and generally be a negative person then no wonder we end up being feared, not liked and avoided.
